A Distant Ship

Am I afraid, or am I being slowly discouraged.

Dismayed by the emptiness of my beating heart.

Am I consumed, or am I being bodily starved.

Eaten by the cells of my inner sentiments.

Am I infatuated, or have I been possessed.

Devoured by the recess of my lonely soul.

Am I swimming after the impossible loveboat.

Drowning in the wake of a passing icebreaker.

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. Scary questions and scary answers. And yet if you’ve asked them, that’s an answer in itself. Might just be my interpretation, but this one has a “no turning back” feel to it. Beautiful poem, Ivor.

  2. The first line in this really played on my mind for a little while. I went back and read it again and again and thought about my own place in life right now. Interesting questions you’ve put for yourself here! Melancholic, and lovely as always.

    1. Haha, I had to read my poem to remember the first line, I can never remember anything I’ve written, which is hopeless when your friends want you to recite some of my poems…. anyhow….the first line, yes it’s quite a poser, and you may read into what you think fits…… I’m not sure myself, if I was afraid or not, and am i being discouraged or just imagining that to be, and so many more questions may be read into the line, and that’s how jumbled my mind was, doubts and questions

      1. I had to smile when you said you can never remember anything you’ve written. I frequently have to look back when answering a reply, especially if the post is a couple of weeks old.

  3. This is a great poem… I used to jump in the water and swim, with no thought of the dangers, or if it would be too cold.
    It was a mistake.
Always best to check the temperature first, then decide if you really want to swim and whether you can maintain the energy to reach the other side.
