Climbing A Rabbit Proof Fence

Today has been one of those days

I’ve been out walking my relay

Listening to the sound of my shuffling feet

Scraping on cobblestones, of the hot city street

A tiredness overcame my body

Searching for the famous Doctor Peabody

I think I collapsed under a wall

The Great Wall Of China

The Berlin Wall

Israel’s Palestinian barricade

The Iron Curtain

Trump’s Mexican wave

Australia’s Rabbit Proof Fence

And my next door neighbour’s big brick wall

I was bulldozed by them all

In a barrel, jumping off Niagara Falls

I’m an arctic sperm whale, beached at Bondi

And the angler at a dry Buckley’s Falls pond

I’m a spawning salmon with no rapids to swim

Today’s battle I lost, on a whim

I’ve been nailed to yesterday’s, burnt out cross

I need a day of rest, to shake off the moss

There’s always a new tomorrow waiting

Yorkie will be there, patient and obeying

Walking shoes ready, at the end of my bed

A good night’s sleep, nothing more need be said

I thoroughly recommend, that you watch this haunting and moving movie, ” Rabbit Proof Fence”

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. “Always a new tomorrow waiting” so well put and so needed to hear it. I hope you have a good rest and that tomorrow goes better for you. I’m sure you don’t need me to say it but don’t overdo it and be kind to yourself! Yorkie is def always there!

    1. Trump seems to think we all need a fence, whether we want it or not. …..none of the fences in history have work… I’ll be ok Arbie, my fav’ quote.. “”You may never know what results of your actions, but if you do nothing, there will be no results” – Mahatma Gandhi

  2. Such a wonderful poem, Ivor! Filled with vivid, heart-touching images, honest emotions, and relatable feelings!
As Scarlett O’Hara said, “Tomorrow is another day”…So, get a good rest and tomorrow start new and fresh!
You can dig out from under walls. I’m just glad you weren’t keeping Humpty Dumpty company! You know…great-falling off of walls! 😮 😉 😀
What a powerful movie and music! I got tears in my eyes.
I know you are like me…we are not wall-builders, we are bridge-builders. 🙂
    (((HUGS))) 🙂

    1. I’m starting my day out, off to Physio soon although it’s hot again 37’C. Thank you for your kind words, the poem had lots of different ideas and emotions, I tried to tie it all together and the wall theme did that. Have a good night Carolyn ❤️xxx

      1. Every thing went well, except it was all very tiring. And I’m home in bed resting at 7.25pm, not sleeping yet, it’s too early and It’s too hot still, over 30’C, and I’m too tired to do any writing. xxx😊❤️🤗🤗

      3. Not a good result Carolyn, I suffered another minor stroke that I didn’t feel, sometime during the last few weeks., the wall is growing higher….and the thorns are becoming sharper, and the rose-bed feels harder…. ((Hugs))

  3. Another lovely heatfelt one. I could really feel your struggle. Hope all went well with your physio. Heatfelt was a typo it should have been heart-felt but given the circumstances of the poem it fits quite nicely!

    1. Yes Sue, everything I’m doing is a struggle, nothing’s working automatically, and I have to try so hard. I’m telling my muscles to move through my brain, as nerves driving the muscles are weakened, I really have to concentrate on everything I do…… And it’s all very tiring both physically and mentally…. With a warm /hot day I get twice as tired… I know the process, I’ve been there before, except I was younger stronger and fitter last time… I know how tough it is… And that frightens me a lot… I’ll just keep battling away and see what happens 😁🤔🤗❤️

    1. Thanks Niki, I suppose my poem is about my battles at the moment and the fences/walls I’ve in front of me….. and then I’m incorporating all the divisions we construct to keep ourselves apart……..xxx
