Water-logged Boots

Yes, I am small in this overburdened world

But I flutter freely when unfurled

I could be a family picture collage

Or a tiny squirrel amongst the foliage

On his journey, of ups and downs

Collecting and storing his acorn crowns

The trick is to enjoy the ups

While the floodgates are shut

Sometimes, I did nearly drown

Other times, I floated upside down

During the many seasonal rains

I wondered, if I’d every swim again

So then, I pretended to write a biblical book

Ignorantly thinking no-one would ever look

Afterwards, I thought I could walk on water

Then my boots became water-logged

And if you need to walk a mile in my shoes

You’ll have to learn how to swim, and sing the blues

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

    1. Nick Cave is a fav’ of mine…. I’ve been listening to ‘Dirty Three’ today, it’s Warren Ellis’s band, the violinist out of Nick Cave’s, The Bad Seeds.. Look bythem up on YouTube, I’m out and only on my phone at the moment 😁😊

  1. Aw. and Oh!
I read this amazing poem twice and I will read it again. I think it is one of your VERY best yet, Ivor. It’s so filled with life and emotions. Tears are filling my eyes, because I can relate to this poem so VERY much.
We must be willing to walk in other people’s shoes…a mile and longer. We must do so to understand and to offer genuine support.
Please keep doing whatever you have to, to keep afloat…keep enjoying the ups. We need you in this world, you with your loving heart, wise mind, gentle spirit, ETC! πŸ™‚
    HUGS!!! πŸ™‚

    1. Oh wow Carolyn …now you have me crying with your delightful comments…. which are all basically what I was trying to express in my words…… and yes there’s a lot in this poem… but I was hoping everyone could understand my poem….. It’s a very intense piece, but with a hint of humour…. which is the way I’ve survived, always trying to smile along with life’s adversities .. xxxx
