Australian Reindeer

Australian Reindeer

I’m waiting in the queue

To buy my concession postage stamps

Finally, at the counter

I present my Australian Post Card

Yet another plastic piece to scan

“Sorry” said the the office clerk

“But you been archived”

My mind goes clunk

“What does that mean”

I said to the clerk

“But I’m here, mostly alive”

“You’ll have to call Australia Post”

Oh well, away I go to phone-up

I’m waiting in the queue

On hold for twenty minutes

Finally, “Hello sir, can I help you.”

After giving him my personal details

I explain my situation

That the computer said

“I’ve been archived!”

The operator said, “That’s strange. Please wait.”

After a few minutes, he speaks

“Hello Ivor.” (he knows my name!)

“It seems you’ve been deleted from the system”

Now, my old-timer’s brain

Grinds to a paniced halt

Not only only have I been archived

But now I’m deleted!

Am I digitally dead

Has my cyberspace cloud flown south

After a few minutes the operator again speaks

“Don’t worry Ivor.”

I swipe the robotic dribble from my chin

“If you use your same card number”

“And apply for a renewal”

“You’ll be re-installed into our system”

Re-installed, that sounds positive

So off I trudge

Back to the Post Office

To fill in the application form

Here I am again

I’m waiting in the queue

So this is Christmas!

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. The card is so funny. The sign of the times with computer systems they are not all what they are cracked up to be. The good old days when you just went to the post office bought your stamps and posted the card. Life is so complicated but they tell us it is more simple. I think not. You whole life can be ruined with a computer system if some baffoon deletes your account. All the extra work and wasted time spent just to post a card.

    Have a Merry Christmas Ivor.

I’m so glad you are alive and well and kickin’ and not archived and deleted anymore! 😀
I laughed at your poem. (Your humor was shining through, Ivor!)
But, I know going through all of that was not funny or fun.
Yes, ’tis the season for such things!

    HUGS!!! for the UGHS!!!
Oh, and How are you doing today?! You’ve been in my thoughts and prayers.

    1. Hello dear Carolyn, I’m not sure whether I’m improving or not…..I kept myself busy today, doing all my(our) Christmas cards, and I’m sure Carole is pleased with my effort….I’ve just finished dinner and now relaxing, I’ve few more stretching exercises to do, but I think I’m gradually on the mend, it’s such a slow progress… but betterer than going backwards, hopefully by the weekend I’ll start to feel the benefits of the exercise program that I’m on…. xxxx ((hugs))
I’m so pleased you enjoyed my humourous take on my awkward situation,…….. It’s fun to make people see the funny side of our silly world….

  3. Darn systems. Many years ago, when I was a Social Services area manager and we had card index systems, clients were in 3 categories: Open meant they had an active social worker; Closed meant they didn’t have one; Inactive meant that their case was not closed but no social worker had been allocated. One day I overheard the telephonist repeatedly telling an elderly disabled woman that she was Inactive. I suggested that she already knew that and it would be better to explain our system.
