A Friend Calls

Ring, ring, and I answer

A familiar voice, “G’day old mate”

“What ya up to”

I answer, “I’ve nothin’ on this arvo”

The ‘best-man’ from my wedding, says

“Good, I’ll come and pick ya up”

“And the missus will make us lunch”

And he joyfully adds

“Then I’ll take you out to see the crew”

“Have a Christmas drink or two”

I’m thinking to myself

An unplanned surprise day

Are fun times and always turn-out the best

An afternoon with old pals

Cheery wishes before the Christmas break

Warm handshakes and hugs all round

A group of friendly smiles from years ago

Tall tales of the past, our highs and lows

“So this is Christmas”

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  2. ‘Arvo’ now that’s a new word for me. I puzzled on it until I read the previous comments, then I realised it meant afternoon. I’m glad you had a lovely time catching up with old friends. πŸ™‚

      1. When I was a kid we would say something like β€œ Are you coming over this afty?” Not thought of that word in a long long time until I saw your word and eventually realised what it meant! πŸ™‚
