This is a poem I wrote for last year’s “National Reconciliation Week”…. and I’m pleased to re-post the words on my site again, during this important week….
Birds Of A Feather
to colour us all tanned
black or white
didn’t seem right
even a humorous sight
maybe blue and green
would’ve been a better blight
and I’ve been told orange
is a preferred skin tone
best we have more colours
I’ll go buy the paint drums
toss them together
shaken, not stirred
into one huge cocktail dish
and use a whale-hair paint brush
we’ll all be covered the same
a faded colour purple
like tarnished rain clouds
not too dark
not too proud
not too white
just bright enough
to see the light
I wonder what has changed since this song was recorded “50 Years” ago….. ??
Ivor Steven (c) June 2020
Sadly nothing has changed since that song. Well done on an excellent topical piece well crafted and expressed.

Yes it is. Nothing changes. Why oh why. It is utterly unbelievable. Still happening in this day and age. What is wrong with people.

Oh I wish I wise enough to formulate an solution…. But until governments change their attitudes about economy and greed…. to socialology and harmony…. things will not change

Perfect, Ivor. Your poem had me thinking of this song before I got to it.

Thank you Derrick… the song’s half a century old…… but attitudes don’t seem to be half a century wiser…..

No…I don’t know what it would take for real change to happen.

Nothing has changed at all. The element of racism is live in different forms. I suffer from it here in Egypt because I am white and green eyed the Egyptian women hate us and their behaviour reflects this. The only thing that shuts their mouth is money. People really believe others have no right to have a life or live.

Perfect poem for the times we’re living in. Hopefully future generations will be more enlightened. Sometimes one just despairs. 😥

A powerful poem and song combo, Ivor!
Sadly, just when we think/hope things are changing a bit, we see they are not.
Some people (and they live in every country in the world) can only seem to live a life of hate, discrimination, small-mindedness, ignorance, bullying, and worse, etc.
They keep perpetuating all of that. 😦

Yes.. The news we are getting from Minneapolis is very sad.
…. The initial incident was totally barbaric and inhumane.
…… And now the reaction is very angry… Mr Martin Luther King would be very much the right man for the situation….
The melting pot seems to be boiling… and the fuel for the fire is very volatile….
And again the response from your racist leader has been irresponsible and in compassionate… 🤔😔🌏

You know I agree with you on all of this.
Unlike most people I have family members who are Asian, Mexican, African-American, and African. So all of this affects me and my family deeply and personally.
I, also, need to be brutally honest and say that every time someone on WP says to me “your leader” that brings me pain. I did not vote for him.
SIGH. Maybe it’s time for me to take a blogging break. I don’t need any more pain right now in my life. 😦

It’s okay. You didn’t do anything wrong.
I’m just overwhelmed with all of the hate and selfishness in the world right now. And some of my relatives are struggling with the racism, etc. 😦
At times I think I’m being overly sensitive and then others I think I’m not being upset enough. 😦
I think I need a break from the world. 😦
