The Weekend Challenge, and the monthly colour challenge for JUNE, “Weekly Prompts” have chosen the colour Obsidian. Please visit their fabulous site by clicking >> Here…. and below is my response to the prompt…
Obsidian Eyes
Humans are in an anxious whirl
Unaware of nature’s harmonious world
Volcanic flames light up the skies
The blazing eclipse darkens angry eyes
Lava’s flowing as obsidian rivers
Black glass groans and shivers
Cold black-ice slips and slides
In a chasm of great white walls, either side
Sheer ugly mirrors of darkness
Reflecting societies obsidian blindness
Unfathomable statues arise
Like hives of frenetic fireflies

I’m sitting in my living room sobbing as I watch Seattle (Washington State, US) become a war zone–there are no “peaceful protests”–it’s anarchy, looting, fires, destruction–violence heaped upon violence. People in downtown Seattle have ignored the curfew–the National Guard is on the way… I don’t think I can take much more, I’m not in physical danger–but emotionally I’m wrecked to the core. Thanks for holding my hand, from a distance.

Thank you Sue…. I slept on the origin of obsidian last night……Here’s my little piece of research…. Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock. Obsidian is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows, where the chemical composition (high silica content) causes a high viscosity, which, upon rapid cooling, results in a natural glass forming from the lava. The inhibition of atomic diffusion through this highly viscous lava explains the lack of crystal growth. Obsidian is hard, brittle, and amorphous; it therefore fractures with sharp edges. In the past, it was used to manufacture cutting and piercing tools, and it has been used experimentally as surgical scalpel blades.

Well done, Ivor! Of course, I saw it through the lens of what is happening in our cities here in the States–a metaphor

Powerful poignant poem…and a creative timely fit for the theme/challenge.
Many people, and certainly some specific people, feel like glass today…and fear shattering. 😦
The pain we see with our eyes quickly reaches our hearts. 😦

Hi Carolyn … how are you…. I hope you are safe
…. I tried to capture how fragile the situation, and obsidian glass/rock seemed to be a suitable metaphor……. as the molten lava contacts the cooling sea…. and my imagination did the rest….. xxx🖤🖤🕳🕳🤍🤍
