Petrified Ground

A raucous howling awakens me

Holding my blankets tightly, I see frightened birds flee

And I hear the fallacious wind wailing

Cutting holes through the hollow night air

I sense a ferocious storm unfolding

From beyond the dark curtained clouds

A foreboding haunting loudly erupts

Cracking and snapping at the starless sky

Clattering with the volume of a coal train

Then perniciously heavy splashes of rain

Start to pound the petrified ground

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

  1. OH! I love this poem, Ivor! It’s powerful…has amazing word-pics…stirs the emotions! One of your bestest! And such a perfect trio with your photo and song/vid choice!!! 🙂
I read it three times! 🙂
Rain can be so healing to the earth and to us Human-Beans. The grand loud show before it falls is sometimes wild, but I guess Rain is saying, “Here I come!” (Likes to make a showy entrance into the room! HA! 😀 )
    (((HUGS))) 🙂
PS…we’ve been getting daily summer storms, so today when I see the lightening and hear the thunder I will think of a clattering coal train. 🙂

      “Decades of Storms”

      Over the decades
      I’ve lived through many storms
      Yesterday
I read about an Atlantic island storm
      After midnight
I had a dream about my life’s storms
      At dawn
I shall open my door to the storms

I will then wait for my storms
      To vacate the dark
      And ask the morning sunlight
      “Am I still the pilot”
