Big Black Oil Cap

Hello dear readers, here is another repost of an older poem, this one is from December 2017

Big Black Oil Cap

Not the town’s greatest car lover

An automobile, an object like any other

Petrol guzzlers

Noisy muzzlers

Inanimate metal and plastic, costing plenty of dough

Pity, they do need some care though

Spoilt and fed like a hungry teenager

Cooling water in the radiator

Screw the shiny brass cap back on

Fresh air in the tyres

Screw the little rubber caps back on

Dear-as-poison petrol in the tank

Screw the safety fuel cap back on

Lubricating oil in the engine-head

This is where absent-mindedness overtook instead

Forgot to screw the Big Black Oil Cap back on

Drove to the Big City the next day

Not realizing I’d gone badly awry

Travelled home in a steamy-hot car

Back onto the driveway tar

Oil dripping over the front bumper-bar

Opened the bonnet. Aaaahhh!

The engine is like a whale’s spout

Spurting boiling, slimy oil all about

And there’s that Big Black Oil Cap

Alone on the garage bench

Like a magician’s gleaming black hat

Cheeky Magpie

Hello readers, over the last few weeks, my blog site has been very hectic, and I have also been kept busy with my commitments at “Go Do Go Cafe”, and “Coffee House Writers” sites. … After sleeping all afternoon, I think I need a break from writing “A Poem A Day” … so today I’m reposting this quaint poem from October 2017.

Cheeky Magpie

A glorious sunny Sunday

Plenty of time for a walk today

Lily prances and plays

“Let’s go now” she says

And of course she talks !!

That’s what we do on our walks

Off to the local countryside cafe

For me, a Brandy & Almond cake and coffee

And you Lily, can quietly sniff around

Wander the shopowner’s grounds

So serene here, sitting on the bower patio

Trees, flowers and birds on show

Then a cheeky Magpie stops by

Lily barks, but cleverly the bird stays high

Atop the coffee-table, crumbs to try

A delicious feast, and off he fly’s

Lily gives him a parting yelp, and we leave

Our pleasant afternoon’s reprieve

Who’ll Stop The Rain

I hardly ever leave my house

Answering the phone is a pain

I cringe like a mouse

In the spotlight again

I feel anxious and threatened

A load of trash blocks my way

The door slams shut every split second

I sit in my chair, am I here to stay?

I hear a cold Autumn wind blow

Rustling leaves against the window-pane

I cannot stop the noise and it has begun to snow

Falling began long ago, who is here to stop the rain?

Throwback Friday, Crooked Ways, by Ivor Steven

Over at “Go Dog Go Cafe’s, Throwback Friday”, I presented my poem “Crooked Ways” which I wrote 3 years ago …

Go Dog Go Café

I originally wrote this in January 2019, (today I have revised and updated the poem) The piece is from when I was home recovering from my second stroke, and before I unfortunately suffered my third stroke in early February

Crooked Ways (revised)

I’m not to be told, how to live my life

It’s now a decade since having lost my wife

I’m not a great philosopher

Nor a modern fashion writer

I’m not a sprightly young surfer

I’ve no money to buy a new carrier

Too old to be a toiling plumber

And these days I prefer to pen poetry

Some say your never too old

Whatever, I shall always be bold

With my plans to reach for the stars

And continue to travel my crooked ways

Sharpen Those Pencils

“As a poet, sometimes we confuse ourselves, Trying to create ashes, instead of fire ” – Loenard Cohen

I wrote this poem for “Go Dog Go Cafe’s , Make It Happen Thursday”, please go over and visit our fabulous site by clicking >> Here http://godoggocafe.com/2022/03/24/make-it-happen-thursday-8/

Sharpen Those Pencils

I like to write with a HB lead pencil
I enjoy the earthy feel of wood in my fingers
And the soft touch of carbon upon paper

During sharpening time, my mind ponders
About the origins of those timber shavings
And the history behind the carbon slithers
These tiny trival objects all evoke thoughts
Then the thoughts instigate words in my mind
And simply like that, my writing process begins

I never retire without my note-pad nearby
And a lead pencil as my trusty writing scribe
Sometimes heavy, other times light
A necessary sword to fight off a dark night

Red Noses and Sad Frowns

There are good clowns and bad clowns

In yesterday’s nightmare, a big bad clown

Trampled everyone in my friend’s hometown

He wore a big Red nose and a big sad frown

Destroying every peaceful thing around

When his big red shoes kicked the ground

The world’s worst fears were then found

To be in the hands of a bad Russian clown
