A Banner Of Sunflowers

Continuing on from yesterday’s Ekphrastic poetry workshop, here is my poetic response to Shirley Drayton’s creative piece of textile artwork “Golden Sunflowers”

A Banner Of Sunflowers

look!

up there

above the Warโ€™s

darkest clouds

there is a blue banner

embroided with sunflowers

swaying

through a hole

in the eastern sky

bearing a message

of โ€˜Helloโ€™

or is it โ€˜Goodbyeโ€™?

a sweeping reminder

from our Ancestors

โ€œwe feel your suffering and pain

from the merciless hard rain

blood filled rivers and cratered plains

smoke filled skylines and cracked windowpanesโ€

โ€œhowever, we also know

beyond the broken horizon

the sunflower seeds of hope

will germinate again

and future seeds for peace

will regenerate a new campaign

G'day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I'm an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I've been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I've been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems.

    1. In my imagination I am hoping for a better future after the dust has settled .. I have been to a few of these Ekphrastic workshops and I thoroughly enjoy the concept ๐ŸŒปโ˜ฎ๏ธ๐Ÿ’•

  1. Your poem is the perfect companion to Shirley Draytonโ€™s โ€œGolden Sunflowersโ€, Ivor. Her artwork inspired you so much. ๐Ÿ™‚ And add in that vid/song and my eyes are filled with tears. You’ve presented 3 beautiful works of art today! Thank you! ๐Ÿ™‚

PS…I looked up the words to the song and found this…
“The night is so bright you could gather needles” is a Ukrainian expression meaning that there’s so much light from the moon and the starts that you can see a needle lying on the ground.” ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. The was song in Ukranian was still outstanding, and I just had to pair it with my poem … and wasn’t sure how my poem would work, but I think it turned out ok …. sometimes my emotional thoughts are difficult to express in words … haha .. I have too many thoughts , and I don’t have words in my limited vocabulary … ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒโ˜ฎ๐ŸŒป

  2. I’m hopeful but also skeptical. Between all that has gone on these last two years, Ukraine, and now these horrific mass shootings in the US, my heart is hurting. But lovely writing, Ivor!
